Living Histories of Migration
Step into the living history of migration in Australia through this panel discussion featuring migrants and refugees who arrived in the 1970s, 1990s and more recently. This panel invites community members to hear firsthand accounts of migration—stories of upheaval, resilience, and the search for belonging.
Panellists will share personal reflections on their journeys, the challenges of settling in a new country, and the contributions they've made to their communities. Together, these stories contribute to an understanding of Australia's evolving cultural landscape.
Featured Speaker: Ashraf Abdelbaky, Director of CALD CONNECT, is a dedicated advocate for the social, physical, and economic well-being of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. His impactful work has earned national recognition, including the 2022 NSW Premier's Multicultural Language Service Medal.
Presented by History Illuminated Festival. This event may be photographed and filmed, and your image could be used in advertising and promotion by Lake Macquarie City Council.
Newcastle Multicultural Soccer Tournament 2026
The Newcastle Multicultural Soccer Tournament 2026 is a vibrant community event that brings people together through the universal language of sport. Celebrating diversity, inclusion, and unity, the tournament provides a platform for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities to showcase their talent, build connections, and strengthen community bonds.
Set to take place in 2026 at the University of Newcastle, this exciting tournament will feature teams representing a wide range of cultural backgrounds from across Newcastle and the Hunter region. Players of all ages and skill levels will compete in a spirit of friendship and respect, highlighting the power of sport to bridge cultures and foster social cohesion.
The event is proudly organised by CALD CONNECT Foundation, with support from local councils, community organisations, and sponsors. Beyond the games, there will be family-friendly activities, food stalls offering diverse cuisines, and opportunities for the broader community to come together and celebrate Newcastle's multicultural spirit.
